Amber on the Glass

The avenue is empty now
Reflections wash across the hood
I left your key upon the shelf
And did the only thing I could

The yellow signals blink in pairs
No other headlights on the lane
I watch the dashboard numbers glow
To drown the sound of what remains

You said we ran out of road
Before the sky could turn to gray
I hear your whisper in the vents
While speeding forty miles away

Amber on the glass tonight
Chasing down the empty street
Nothing left to keep us warm
Underneath the dashboard heat

The concrete bridges pass above
The radio is tuned to white
I keep my foot against the floor
To outrun everything tonight

A quiet turn onto the ring
The cold air rushes through the seal
I count the markers in the dark
To make this sudden distance real

You said we ran out of road
Before the sky could turn to gray
I hear your whisper in the vents
While speeding forty miles away

Amber on the glass tonight
Chasing down the empty street
Nothing left to keep us warm
Underneath the dashboard heat

The skyline drops behind the glass
A distant line of fading red
There are no words left on my tongue
Except the ones we never said

The digital clock is turning four
The yellow markers start to fade
I finally let the silence in
And pay for every choice we made

Four o'clock and no one calls
The tires hum along the lane
I leave your shadow in the dark
And take the highway through the rain

Amber on the glass tonight
Chasing down the empty street
Nothing left to keep us warm
Underneath the dashboard heat

Before the sky can turn to gray
Just forty miles away
Reflections washing down the glass
Just forty miles away
