Chrome and Dust

the orange light hits the hood
i see the chrome start to glow
you lean against the fender
my shadow moves on the door
the engine makes a low hum
it shakes the gravel below

muscle car in the dark
silhouette girl stands still
engine heat on my skin
watching the lights blink out
muscle car in the dark
silhouette girl stands still

i pull the keys from my pocket
you don't move an inch away
the seat is warm and leather
it smells like gas and old rain
your hair catches the neon
blue light cuts through the haze

muscle car in the dark
silhouette girl stands still
engine heat on my skin
watching the lights blink out
muscle car in the dark
silhouette girl stands still

no words leave your lips now
just the sound of the vent
the city is a blur behind
we stay inside this metal box
one minute turns into ten
the needle jumps on the dash

muscle car in the dark
silhouette girl stands still
engine heat on my skin
watching the lights blink out
muscle car in the dark
silhouette girl stands still

the tank is getting low now
i feel the vibration change
you reach for the radio knob
static fills up the cabin
then a beat starts to kick in
heavy and steady and deep

muscle car in the dark
silhouette girl stands still
engine heat on my skin
watching the lights blink out
muscle car in the dark
silhouette girl stands still

the lights blink out
one more turn of the wheel
just a shadow and some chrome
fading into the gray
