Iron Queen

Kansas highway dust still on my coat
Jet lag humming deep inside my throat
Turned the corner by the limestone wall
Never thought a shadow stood that tall

Pictures in a magazine lie cold
Flat postcards you bought and then you sold
Nothing told me iron learned to breathe
Pinned against the twilight of the Seine

There you stand, an open lace of sky
Caught me by the throat and asked me why
All the worlds I knew could fit right here
Suddenly the quiet turns so clear
Looking up till Kansas fades away
Iron queen turning night into day

Sparks are dancing on the river bend
Lattice reaching where the clouds begin
Every stranger stops and lets it fall
Silence running right through us all

There you stand, an open lace of sky
Caught me by the heart and made me cry
All the dreams I held could fit right here
Suddenly the quiet turns so clear
Looking up till Kansas fades away
Iron queen turning night into day

I used to think that giants were of stone
Heavy things that made you feel alone
Now I see how steel can learn to fly
Etched in gold across the Paris sky

There you stand, an open lace of sky
Caught my breath and taught me how to fly
All my life was leading up right here
Suddenly tomorrow is so clear
Looking up till Kansas fades away
Iron queen turning night into day

Just an iron queen
Standing in the gold
Bigger than the stories
I was ever told
