Our Key Under the Doormat

A silver tooth in the porch light
Cold brass against the thumb
Cracked vinyl on the bucket seat
Streetlights humming one by one
The freeway glows like molten glass
Waiting for the beat to come

Coarse brown fibers of the mat
Dust rising in a tiny cloud
Two empty cups on the coffee table
Sirens passing clear and loud
The whole fifth floor is holding breath
Underneath a paper shroud

Leave our key under the doormat
Let the hallway take the bass
Turn the deadbolt with your fingers
Feel the rhythm in the space
Neon ribbons on the ceiling
Spinning faster in the night

A lipstick smudge on the mirror frame
Four damp tiles upon the floor
Tail lights tracing on the avenue
Curtains floating by the door

Leave our key under the doormat
Let the hallway take the bass
Turn the deadbolt with your fingers
Feel the rhythm in the space
Neon ribbons on the ceiling
Spinning faster in the night

A copper penny on the sill
A kick drum shaking down the glass
The skyline burns in electric blue
Watch the morning fade to past

Leave our key under the doormat
Let the hallway take the bass
Turn the deadbolt with your fingers
Feel the rhythm in the space
Neon ribbons on the ceiling
Spinning faster in the night

Turn the deadbolt in the lock
Leave our key under the doormat
Feel the skyline start to drop
Leave our key under the doormat
