Pennies on the Floorboard

step out of line and hit the ground
the biggest noise inside this town

you drop your jacket on the chair
you tie the ribbon in your hair
the clock says seven on the wall
you never wait for them to call
I watch you lace your heavy boots
we share the gravel and the roots
you grab the keys right off the hook
without a single backward look

we count the pennies on the floor
we kick the lock and slam the door
the headlights flash across the lane
we do not care about the rain
we got the world beneath our shoes
and nothing here is left to lose

the engine turns on number four
you leave your coffee by the door
I check the mirror on my side
the yellow street is long and wide
you turn the dial up all the way
we scream the words we want to say
a pack of gum between the seats
we take a turn through empty streets

we count the pennies on the floor
we kick the lock and slam the door
the headlights flash across the lane
we do not care about the rain
we got the world beneath our shoes
and nothing here is left to lose

we split a sandwich from the tin
you wipe the mustard off your chin
the wipers scrape the dusty pane
we share an apple once again
you roll the side window right down
and leave the shadows of that town

we count the pennies on the floor
we kick the lock and slam the door
the headlights flash across the lane
we do not care about the rain
we got the world beneath our shoes
and nothing here is left to lose

the petrol station sells us tea
you sit right down and laugh with me
two pound fifty in a cup
we never plan on giving up
a postcard stuck behind the glass
we watch the morning traffic pass
