Rearview Mirror Tears

The yellow sodium lights bleed into gray
The city in the glass is pulled away
I press my heavy foot against the floor
And nothing looks like home here anymore

I touch the glass to wipe the ghost of you
Across the dark where all the lines run through
The headlights fade into the salt and rain
And I am moving faster than the pain

Rearview mirror tears are shining bright
Reflecting every promise in the night
I see you standing small behind the wheel
And this is all the mercy I can feel

Your silver earring falling on the seat
The colder hum beneath the endless street
I never asked for heaven to be kind
I only took what we could leave behind

Rearview mirror tears are shining bright
Reflecting every promise in the night
I see you standing small behind the wheel
And this is all the mercy I can feel

A deeper shadow falls across the lane
There is no turning back this wheel again
It is too late for sorrow or regret
It is the only truth I haven't met

Rearview mirror tears are shining bright
Reflecting every promise in the night
I see you standing small behind the wheel
And this is all the mercy I can feel

Into the open night
Out of the fading light
Rearview mirror tears
Through all the heavy years
