Rust on Wire

You left your coffee cold again
Beside my broken pocket knife
I hate the way you wear my shirt
And how you saved my rotten life
The floorboards creak beneath your socks
You bite your lip until it bleeds
I bought the medicine you hate
Because you are the thing I need
I broke the mirror in the hall
To keep from looking at my face
You swept the pieces in your hands
And built another holy place
I said I never wanted this
I lied directly to your eyes
You smelled like rain and bitter smoke
And cut right through my cheap disguise

Bleed into me like rust on wire
Burn up the bed and call it fire
I am too tired to keep my guard
You make the ugly parts too hard
To throw away, to throw away
I want you here, so go away

You keep the key around your neck
Like I could ever lock the door
I threw my guitar down the stairs
And watched you sit down on the floor
You tuned the strings that did not snap
You hummed that stupid summer tune
I cursed the daylight coming in
And prayed to keep the dying moon

Bleed into me like rust on wire
Burn up the bed and call it fire
I am too tired to keep my guard
You make the ugly parts too hard
To throw away, to throw away
I want you here, so go away

My mother had that crooked spine
You take my hands and make them still
Nobody ever loved this dirt
And nobody but you ever will
I am a dog out in the storm
You open up the window wide
I bite the blanket just to scream
Because I want to stay inside

Bleed into me like rust on wire
Burn up the bed and call it fire
I am too tired to keep my guard
You make the ugly parts too hard
To throw away, to throw away
I want you here, so go away

Rust on wire
Rust on wire
Burn the bed
Call it fire
Stay inside
Stay inside
Do not go away
