Without a Thought

A chipped porcelain cup
A bent silver key
Rain starts over the avenue
Neon reflecting on wet black asphalt

A torn paper receipt
Two plastic blue lids
Windows lighting up one by one
Night swallows the whole avenue

We let it all fall through our fingers
Easy come and easy go
Small silent ghosts in the gutter
We throw away without a thought

A faded bus ticket
Folded in half
Cars rushing under flickering streetlamps
People walking fast in their coats

We let it all fall through our fingers
Easy come and easy go
Small silent ghosts in the gutter
We throw away without a thought

One rusted hairpin
A cracked phone screen
Dark alleys stretching for miles
Smoke rising from the roofs

We let it all fall through our fingers
Easy come and easy go
Small silent ghosts in the gutter
We throw away without a thought

A single loose button
Lost in the neon glow
