Clear Across the Divide

The party on the roof is fading out
Golden sparklers burn down to the wire
I took your keys without a second doubt
To settle what was swallowed by the fire

The city turns to amber in the glass
The open top is breathing in the chill
I promised you before the summer passed
We'd put this debt behind that western hill

I steer your convertible westward tonight
Chasing the rim where the dark meets the light
A word on the wind and a debt in the chest
We clear out the balance by facing the west

White lines run parallel and never mend
The desert air is clean against my hand
I told you I would take it to the end
And leave our heavy shadows in the sand

No looking backward in the rearview chrome
The roof we left is quiet as a stone
I owe you this across the empty miles
To turn a bitter ledger into smiles

I steer your convertible westward tonight
Chasing the rim where the dark meets the light
A word on the wind and a debt in the chest
We clear out the balance by facing the west

No sparklers left to light the midnight roof
Just highway hum and honest, steady proof
That every mile between the past and here
Is washing every dusty promise clear

I steer your convertible westward tonight
Chasing the rim where the dark meets the light
A word on the wind and a debt in the chest
We clear out the balance by facing the west

Facing the west tonight
Clearing the line
Facing the west
