The Velvet Table

I shuffle decks on the green felt
I watch the plastic tokens melt
You wore a coat of faded blue
Your collarbone was showing through
I swore I'd win the final round
I threw your money on the ground

I pushed our savings on the red
The iron ball hit black instead
I stole your father's silver watch
And traded it for cheaper scotch
The velvet table took it all

I pack my suitcase by the bed
The motel sign is blinking red
You sleep against the peeling wall
I hear the dirty diesels crawl
I leave a dollar on the glass
I watch the empty buses pass

I pushed our savings on the red
The iron ball hit black instead
I stole your father's silver watch
And traded it for cheaper scotch
The velvet table took it all

The dealer deals another hand
I walk across the desert sand
I left you broke in room sixteen
I wash my dirty fingers clean

I pushed our savings on the red
The iron ball hit black instead
I stole your father's silver watch
And traded it for cheaper scotch
The velvet table took it all

The slot machines flash in the hall
I hear the pit boss shout and call
The velvet table took it all
