Neon Dust

Headlights burning a hole in the night
Static on the radio, we're doing alright
White lines blurring into a memory
You got the wheel, I got the key

We're chasing down the sun before it breaks
Leaving behind the town and all its mistakes
This highway's got a rhythm, hear it beat
Rolling thunder underneath our feet

Neon dust in our hair, wind in our eyes
We're just a couple of ghosts under endless skies
Nobody knows where we're going, nobody cares
We're trading yesterday for a handful of flares

The dashboard clock is flashing 3 AM
I trace the map on your arm with my pen
You say we'll make the coast by the afternoon
I say I'd follow you to the dark of the moon

Every mile marker is a story we shed
Every empty diner is a word left unsaid
But out here in the motion, we are alive
Nothing left to lose, nowhere to arrive

Neon dust in our hair, wind in our eyes
We're just a couple of ghosts under endless skies
Nobody knows where we're going, nobody cares
We're trading yesterday for a handful of flares

And if the engine dies in the middle of nowhere
I'll strike a match just to see you stand there
With that smile that says we're already home
Out on this road, we are never alone

Neon dust in our hair, wind in our eyes
We're just a couple of ghosts under endless skies
Nobody knows where we're going, nobody cares
We're trading yesterday for a handful of flares

Keep the pedal down, don't let it fade
We're a modern runaway parade
Neon dust
Yeah, neon dust
