That Silent Phone Between Us Two

A cracked glass screen.
A green light pulsing once.
Cables curled across the basement floor.
Cold water dripping from an overhead pipe.
That silent phone between us two.

A thumb hovering over black.
Dust dancing through the naked bulb.
The whole damp cellar starts to hum.
Drumsticks clicking three sharp counts.
That silent phone between us two.
It holds the room right in its throat.
Waiting for the kick to crack the wall.

A cigarette burned to the orange filter.
Four walls of cinder block and grey.
Your shadow left along the plaster seam.
Outside the rain is flooding through the drain.

A thumb hovering over black.
Dust dancing through the naked bulb.
The whole damp cellar starts to hum.
Drumsticks clicking three sharp counts.
That silent phone between us two.
It holds the room right in its throat.
Waiting for the kick to crack the wall.

A sudden hiss inside the amplifier.
A dry mouth swallowing the buzz.
No ringing bell, just heavy air.
The floorboards shaking underneath my boots.

A thumb hovering over black.
Dust dancing through the naked bulb.
The whole damp cellar starts to hum.
Drumsticks clicking three sharp counts.
That silent phone between us two.
It holds the room right in its throat.
Waiting for the kick to crack the wall.
