Under the Floodlights

You tilt your cup beneath the stadium glow
Grinning at strangers we will never know
The grass is manicured, the jackets white
We stole an hour from the working night

The tournament is done, the trophies gleam
You mock the wealthy in a waking dream
Cold plastic sweating in your heavy hand
Two trespassing ghosts in a promised land

The yellow arc-lamps cut the summer haze
You catch my eye across the manic maze
We hear the highway calling out our names
Too rough for lawns, too restless for their games

Under the floodlights of this tournament lawn
Our final truck leaves the depot by dawn
You keep on laughing like we found a home
When all we know is asphalt and the roam
We will never settle down

The gates are open and the engines cool
You play the prince and I become the fool
Silver and silk among the borrowed chairs
Ignoring morning and the freight out there

You spill your drink and let the laughter rise
Reflected towers in your tired eyes
No garden wall can keep our wheels pinned fast
This sudden masquerade is just our last

The yellow arc-lamps cut the summer haze
You catch my eye across the manic maze
We hear the highway calling out our names
Too rough for lawns, too restless for their games

Under the floodlights of this tournament lawn
Our final truck leaves the depot by dawn
You keep on laughing like we found a home
When all we know is asphalt and the roam
We will never settle down

Let them keep the manicured green
We belong to the space in between
Finish your glass and leave the crowd behind
There is a boundary line we have to find

The floodlights flicker in the cooling air
We take the exit from their little fair

Under the floodlights of this tournament lawn
Our final truck leaves the depot by dawn
You keep on laughing like we found a home
When all we know is asphalt and the roam
We will never settle down
